Yu/玉

The name of my project is Yu, “Yu” is my family name and has same pronunciation with jade in Chinese language. My mother likes jade, she told me jade is very spiritual. There is a saying in China that “people nurtures the jade for three years, and the jade will nurture the people for a whole life”. With a longer wearing time, the surface of the jade will form a layer of patina, and the character of the jade will be more and more bright. Jade is the material basis of Chinese unique culture, and is token of beautifulness, kindness, grace, dignity and nobility. It was often said in Chinese culture that jade bears spirit of the people, it could help the wearer to become a better person. With a long wearing time of jade, the nimbus of jade interacted with the wearer and made the jade shinier, warmer and smoother, the wearer will be healthier and more elegant. Confucius said the personality of person should be like the jade: kind, warm, amiable, beautiful and noble. After the time of Confucius, the culture of jade became more deep rooted. “The gentleman is as warm as the jade”. My growth witnessed growth of my mother, I saw her became more and more resolute and brave, she has very beautiful quality just like the jade, and they both became more thorough and beautiful, time endowed unique beauty to them, and I want to use jade as a symbol to represent mom. The formation, cutting and patching of jade is just like the birth of female, squeezed against the outside world, nurtured life, these three stages correspond to each other. I cooperated with a dancer to use dancing movement of three different stages to express three life stages of female, the first stage was growing, the second stage was confronting, and the third stage was pregnancy and became independent individual, and the interactive software of touch designer was used to generate an interactive video. The dancing of each different stage of the dancer will correspondently generate three different types of coil pattern. The three patterns respectively represented the growing, confronting and pregnancy of female. At the same time, the breasts of female wear also growing and changing in the three stages, in the growing stage of female, the breast was in initial growing period and the gland was less. The breast of female was mature in confronting stage, and the gland quantity was more than the last stage. Gland of female breast is most rich in pregnancy and mature period of female. As the way of the breast of female transports milk and structure of the gland reminded me of serial and parallel circuits, I chose to use a little luminous led bulb to represent an acinus, used serial electric wire to simulate complex conduit.

 

I combined the three stage breasts with the coil and made a baby bed bell, used this softest method to let each audience think up of the ever growing females beside them when watching the bed bell. I chose mirror surface as the most important material, I hope my work could generate certain connection with the audience, when the audience approaches the bed bell, they could see their own color and resonate with the work.
